Whole Foods to Lower Prices Starting August 28th

Whole Foods may not be known as "Whole Paycheck" too much longer.

Amazon purchased Whole Foods Market on June 16, 2017 and the changes are coming. Amazon had announced that they’ll be cutting Whole Foods’ prices significantly, beginning this Monday (8/28). The company will be lowering prices of best-selling grocery staples and offering lower prices on more items over time.

“Customers will enjoy lower prices on products like Whole Trade bananas, organic avocados, organic large brown eggs, organic responsibly-farmed salmon and tilapia, organic baby kale and baby lettuce, animal-welfare-rated 85% lean ground beef, creamy and crunchy almond butter, organic Gala and Fuji apples, organic rotisserie chicken, 365 Everyday Value organic butter, and much more,” Amazon said in a press release.

Of course being a Prime member will have new perks as Amazon Prime members will get even more savings at Whole Foods.

Plus, Whole Foods private label products like 365 Everyday Value, Whole Foods Market, Whole Paws and Whole Catch will eventually be available through Amazon.com, AmazonFresh, Prime Pantry and Prime Now. Score!!!

Amazon Lockers will also start appearing in select stores where customers can have products shipped from Amazon.com to a local Whole Foods store for pickup. Pretty neat.

We'll keep you informed as we know even more.

"Whole"some Recipes from Whole Foods!

My husband and I love to cook for our family.  We cook at least 5 nights a week every single week.  It's challenging though coming up with better recipes to eat healthier.  Thanks to Whole Foods for making the challenge much less stressful and complicated.  They have great wholesome recipes for any night of the week!  Check them out here.

Our favorite new recipe we've tried is the Prosciutto-Wrapped Asparagus.  We love to grill Asparagus, but living in Colorado, we don't usually grill outside in the winter, which can run from Oct - Mar some years.  So, this is a wonderful, tasty, and fun alternative for us!

Look for the best asparagus in the springtime. And brush the prosciutto with a bit of Dijon mustard for extra tanginess, if you like.

Ingredients

24 stalks of asparagus, trimmed
4 thin slices of prosciutto
Freshly ground pepper
2 tablespoons freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
1 lemon, quartered

Method

Preheat oven to 425°.

Cover asparagus with water in a large, deep skillet and bring to a boil. Cook just until tender, 2 to 3 minutes, then transfer asparagus to a bowl of ice water until chilled to stop the cooking; drain well.

Divide asparagus into 4 piles, wrapping each with a slice of prosciutto around the center to form a bundle. Transfer to a baking sheet, season with pepper and sprinkle with Parmigiano-Reggiano. Roast until cheese is golden brown, 4 to 5 minutes. Transfer to plates and serve with lemon wedges on the side.

Nutrition

Per serving: 70 calories (20 from fat), 2g total fat, 1g saturated fat, 15mg cholesterol, 410mg sodium, 6g total carbohydrate (2g dietary fiber, 2g sugar), 7g protein

Another fabulous recipe you must try is Chicken Taco Pizza!  This is a wonderful meal for our Movie night in front of the tv with the kids.  It is so delicious!

Serves 4

You can't go wrong with the best of family favorites, pizza and Mexican food, in one meal! For a vegetarian version, simply substitute sauteed zucchini or bell peppers and onions for the chicken. If you only have two mouths to feed, serve half of the pizza for dinner and pack the leftovers for lunch the next day.

Ingredients

1 frozen whole wheat pizza crust, thawed
1/2 cup tomatillo salsa, plus more for serving
1/4 pound part-skim mozzarella, shredded, divided
1 cup no-salt-added black beans, rinsed and drained
1 cup frozen yellow corn, thawed
1 frozen boneless, skinless grilled chicken breast (such as Nature's Rancher brand), thawed and chopped
1/4 cup chopped cilantro

Method

Preheat oven to 425°F. Arrange crust on a pizza stone or large baking sheet. Spread salsa over crust and sprinkle with half of the cheese. Top with beans, corn, chicken and remaining cheese and bake until crust is crisp and cheese is bubbly, about 25 minutes. Sprinkle with cilantro, cut into 8 pieces and serve with more salsa on the side.

Nutrition

Per serving: 410 calories (90 from fat), 10g total fat, 3g saturated fat, 30mg cholesterol, 730mg sodium, 56g total carbohydrate (9g dietary fiber, 6g sugar), 22g protein

Whole Foods Meal Ideas

Here are some meal ideas for you using the ad at Whole Foods to save money!

In the Whole Deal April: there are several coupons you can use:
Smart Ground by Lightlife
Imgine Soup
Muir Glen Organic
Newman O’s oreo cookies
Seeds of Change Rice product
Oikos yogurt product
Udi’s Gluten Free Food
Arrowhead Mills Cereals
Organic Goat Cheese

Use these to inexpensively enhance a meal. Think adding “bulk” to a meal this psyches out the brain thinking it is getting more food, instead it is getting more nutrition and less portion of food:

Salsa:
                  Muir Glen Organic Tomatoes
                  ¼ Pineapple finely chopped
                  ¼ Jalapeno (deseeded)
                  3 garlic cloves finely smashed
4 hard dashes of Italian seasoning

Marina Sauce:
                  Muir Glen Marinara

Enhance with  veggies:
Yellow bell pepper, Muir Glen Tomatoes, 1 garlic clove smashed, baby bellas (mushroom)

At Breakfast time:

add to Oatmeal (whole Foods bulk is 1.19 per pound – great way to save money)
Add: flaxseed (bulk) or Bob’s Red Meal Flaxseed meal
Add: natural Peanut Butter or almond butter
Add: Quinoa (cook like rice and add to Oatmeal or add to oatmeal 2 tbsp already cooked quinoa to oatmeal then cook)
Add: blueberry and almond (crushed ½ tsp) – brain power

Add to Pancakes “bulk”
Quinoa, buckwheat flour, flaxseed meal/ seed, oatmeal and use less pancake mixture… adds more fiber
A fun idea: take a banana squish it and make it smoothe, spread like “butter” because you will not use butter or syrup, in between the layers of pancakes and drizzle with local honey

Dessert:
Newman O’s “oreo cookies” add as a topping to Oikos Yogurt
                  Or
Add Newman O’s to the bottom of a pan and add yogurt ice cream on top like a “yogurt pie” add fruit toppings such as blueberries, strawberries, raspberries from the produce area (that are on sale) like strawberries are on sale this week. 2/$7

Dinner idea:
                  “Fried” Chicken
Take chicken and dip in a whipped 2 egg whites or 1 egg and then shake around in a bag with crushed Maple Buckwheat Arrowhead Cereal
Bake and serve over spinach salad or brussel sprouts

Brussel  Sprouts : cook with olive oil and applewood bacon pieces  & garlic – yum!

Lunch:
The easiest thing on the planet is to have leftovers
If you have hashbrowns for breakfast, then add shrimp to the skillet and heat it up and have Shrimp Browns
IF you have tacos for dinner have taco salad for lunch

Tacos:
Use the Smart Ground Tofu as a meat substitute, tofu takes on the properties of what you season it with so either the taco seasoning that you get or the combo of: cumin, cayenne, chili powder, Italian seasoning, garlic, onion into the skillet. What is easiest: tofu cooks best with water so no oil here… Use instead: deseed stoplight peppers to add “oil” when you add the 2 cups of water down through the tofu. Add the peppers and seasoning and allow everything to cook down.

Serve with cheese: which ever you prefer like feta or Mexican cheese … remember mozzarella has a salty taste, so watch that idea

Eggs for lunch:
Egg nachos same base above add nachos (cheese on top of nachos and eggs on top of that with Muir Glen Organic Salsa mixture you put together ). Suggestion, leave some out that does not have the pineapple so you can use it later on eggs, etc. for a fat-burning meal delight

Soup:
Boring soup to fun colorful soup:
Take the Imagine Soup, Butternut Squash and add Roasted Red Pepper on top
To make your own Roasted Bell Pepper – cut up in quarters and broil in oven or boil in water for a quick second on the stove.
Slice small and put over the Soup for a colorful nutritious meal

Earth’s Best Frozen Waffles:
Take the banana spread for the kids.
Take the frozen 365 blueberries and smash a few and use as a spread too

Seeds of Change Rice:
Add to the side – remember it’s a carb so not so much 1/8c is all you need… it will go a long way!
Add the peppers, garlic, edamame (frozen section) to the rice
Add any protein: steak, chicken, shrimp, tilapia to dish

More Ways to Save at Whole Foods

Just walking in the place makes me happy.  It probably has something to do with the scent of Lavender that catches you the minute you walk in, but I think it is much more than that.  Their produce section is second-to-none, a steak from Whole Foods will blow your mind and their customer service is SPECTACULAR!

But wait....isn't Whole Foods too expensive for a frugal gal such as myself.  As determined as I am, you might know that I would find ways to get my "fix" on affordably.

You may have already read my Whole Foods 101 but if you haven't take a few minutes to find out how I already save at Whole Foods. Now for more good news....

I had a meeting last week with two great gals from Whole Foods and they informed me of a few things that I didn't know.

1. Whole Foods will let you sample ANYTHING in their store (with the exception of alcohol) before you buy it, just ask anyone wearing a Whole Foods apron for assistance.

2. They will sell you ANY amount/weight of a product that they package in-store. If you can only afford $0.50 worth of blue cheese, they will cut it down to $0.50!! How cool is that?

3. You can return ANYTHING at Whole Foods for ANY reason, even alcohol. They want you to know that if you are not satisfied with a product, you will get a full refund.

AND.....drumroll please

4. The stores WILL allow you to use (1) Whole Deal coupon AND (1) Manufacturer's coupon on the same product!

Happy Savings!

Thanks MyBatonRougeMommy!
